In the hierarchy of dentistry, the highest goal is always to save the natural tooth. Nothing functions quite as perfectly as the root you were born with.
However, when a tooth is heavily broken, cracked, or has undergone root canal therapy, a simple filling is no longer sufficient. A filling patches a hole; it does not hold the tooth together. Under chewing pressure, a large filling can act like a wedge, splitting the remaining tooth structure.

Indications: When Do You Need a Crown?

A tooth that has had a root canal is "dead"—it has no blood supply. This makes the dentine brittle and dry, like a dead branch. Without a crown to bind it together, a root-canal-treated tooth has a high risk of shattering under pressure.
2. The Cracked Tooth Syndrome
If you feel a sharp pain when you bite down on a specific spot, you may have a hairline crack. A crown holds the segments of the tooth together, stopping the crack from spreading to the root (which would require extraction).
3. Large Failing Fillings

- Two weeks later, you return. We remove the temporary.

How long does a crown last?

The Vulnerability
The crown itself (ceramic) cannot decay. However, the tooth underneath still can. If you do not brush the gum line where the crown meets the tooth, plaque can seep underneath.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does it hurt to get a crown?
No. The tooth is fully anaesthetised. It feels no different than getting a filling. Afterward, the gum may be slightly tender for 24 hours due to the polishing, but this is managed easily with salt water rinses.
What if my temporary crown falls out?
Temporary cement is designed to be weak so we can remove it easily. If it falls out, don't panic. Put a tiny dab of toothpaste or denture glue inside it and pop it back on. Call us, and we will recement it for you.
Can I eat normally?
With the temporary crown, you should avoid sticky toffees or very crunchy bread. Once the Permanent Crown is fitted, you can eat anything—apples, steak, nuts—with full confidence.
Is a crown better than a veneer?
They serve different purposes. A veneer is for aesthetics and covers only the front. A crown is for strength and covers the whole tooth. If your tooth is healthy, we prefer a veneer (less drilling). If your tooth is broken or root-filled, we prefer a crown (more protection).
