Broken Tooth: What to Do and What to Expect
A broken tooth can happen in an instant—a fall, a sports collision, biting on something unexpected, or simply the final failure of a tooth weakened over time. Whatever the cause, the immediate priority is protecting the tooth from further damage and relieving any pain.
At our South Kensington practice, we reserve emergency slots daily for situations exactly like this. We understand the urgency—both physical (protecting the nerve, preventing infection) and emotional (it's your smile). Our team combines the latest dental technology with over 40 years of combined clinical experience to restore broken teeth to full function and beauty.
The outcome depends largely on what's broken and how quickly you act. Small chips are straightforward; complex fractures involving the root may require extraction. But even in worst-case scenarios, we have solutions that can restore your smile completely.
Types of Broken Teeth
Not all breaks are equal. The type of fracture determines treatment options and urgency:
Minor Chip
A small piece of enamel breaks off, usually from the edge of a front tooth. Often painless since it doesn't reach the dentin. Mostly a cosmetic concern.
Treatment: Smoothing, bonding, or veneer
Urgency: Low – but book soon to prevent further chipping
Fractured Cusp
A pointed part of the chewing surface breaks off, common around large fillings. Usually doesn't affect the pulp. May cause sensitivity.
Treatment: Onlay or crown
Urgency: Moderate – tooth is vulnerable to further damage
Moderate Break
Significant portion of tooth broken, exposing dentin (the yellow layer under enamel). Sensitive to temperature, air, and touch. Risk of bacteria reaching the pulp.
Treatment: Crown, possibly root canal
Urgency: High – see a dentist within 24 hours
Severe Break (Exposed Nerve)
Large break exposing the pulp (nerve). Extremely painful, bleeding from the tooth. High risk of infection.
Treatment: Root canal + crown, or extraction
Urgency: Emergency – seek care immediately
Vertical Root Fracture
Crack extends from the root upward. Often occurs in root-treated teeth. May show minimal symptoms initially, then sudden pain or swelling.
Treatment: Usually extraction; implant replacement
Urgency: High – root fractures typically can't be saved
Split Tooth
Tooth has broken into two or more separate pieces. Usually the result of an untreated cracked tooth.
Treatment: Extraction; sometimes one part can be saved
Urgency: High – infection risk, need to assess salvageability
What to Do Immediately After Breaking a Tooth
Stay Calm and Assess
Take a breath. Most broken teeth can be repaired. Look in a mirror to see the extent of the damage. Is there bleeding? Can you see pink/red tissue (pulp) in the centre?
Save Any Pieces
If you can find the broken piece, save it. Place it in milk or saliva (not water). While we often can't reattach it, seeing the piece helps us understand the break pattern and plan treatment.
Rinse Gently
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clean the area and reduce bacteria. Don't swish vigorously—be gentle around the broken tooth.
Control Bleeding
If there's bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or a damp tea bag. Bleeding usually stops within 10-15 minutes.
Manage Pain
Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen is ideal as it reduces inflammation). Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
Protect Sharp Edges
If a jagged edge is cutting your tongue or cheek, cover it temporarily with sugar-free gum or dental wax (available from pharmacies).
Call Us Immediately
Phone 020 7183 0755 to book an emergency appointment. Describe what happened and any symptoms. We'll advise on urgency and get you seen as quickly as possible.
Don't Wait: Even if a broken tooth doesn't hurt, it needs professional assessment. The nerve may be compromised without immediate pain, and bacteria can enter the tooth through exposed dentin, leading to infection or abscess days later.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the severity and location of the break. We always aim to save the natural tooth when possible.
1. Composite Bonding (From £295)
For chips and minor breaks, composite bonding is often the ideal solution:
- Tooth-coloured resin sculpted directly onto the tooth
- Completed in a single appointment
- No drilling or anaesthesia needed for small chips
- Excellent aesthetic results—virtually invisible
- Can be repaired or modified if needed later
2. Porcelain Veneers (From £950)
When a front tooth has significant damage or you want a more durable, stain-resistant result, porcelain veneers provide excellent protection and aesthetics:
- Custom-made porcelain shell covers the entire front surface
- Highly durable—typically lasts 10-15+ years
- Stain-resistant and natural-looking
- Can address colour and shape concerns simultaneously
3. Dental Crowns (From £750)
For more substantial breaks, a dental crown provides complete protection by encasing the entire visible tooth:
- Full coverage protection for weakened teeth
- Restores full chewing function
- Porcelain or zirconia for natural appearance
- Essential after root canal treatment
- Long-lasting (15-25+ years with good care)
4. Root Canal + Crown (From £950 + Crown)
If the break has exposed or damaged the pulp (nerve), root canal treatment can save the tooth:
- Removes damaged or infected nerve tissue
- Eliminates pain and prevents abscess
- Allows the natural tooth to be retained
- Crown placed afterwards to protect the tooth
5. Extraction + Replacement
When a tooth cannot be saved—vertical root fracture, severe split, or extensive decay—extraction may be the only option. We then discuss replacement options:
- Dental Implants (from £2,500): The gold standard—a titanium root with a porcelain crown. Looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.
- Dental Bridge: Uses adjacent teeth to support a replacement tooth. No surgery required.
- Partial Denture: Removable option, most economical for replacing multiple teeth.

"Great treatment with Dr. Andreia. Had composite bondings done and can honestly highly recommend it. It perfectly blends in with my natural shade and no one can tell I've had anything done."— K D, Google Review
Preventing Broken Teeth
While accidents happen, many broken teeth are preventable:
- Wear a mouthguard for sports: Custom-fitted guards from your dentist offer far better protection than shop-bought versions
- Don't use teeth as tools: Opening bottles, tearing packaging, or holding objects puts teeth at risk
- Avoid chewing ice and hard sweets: Common causes of fractured cusps and cracks
- Address grinding: A night guard protects against the massive forces generated during sleep grinding
- Replace large fillings: Old, large amalgam fillings weaken teeth. Crowns can protect before they break
- Regular check-ups: We can identify cracks and weaknesses before they fail catastrophically
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a broken tooth be saved?
Usually, yes. Most broken teeth can be repaired with bonding, crowns, or root canal treatment. The main exceptions are vertical root fractures and severely split teeth. Even then, implants provide excellent replacement options.
Is a broken tooth an emergency?
It depends on severity. Exposed nerve (severe pain, visible pink tissue) is a true emergency—call immediately. Chips and moderate breaks should be seen within 24-48 hours. Even painless breaks need attention soon to prevent complications.
Why doesn't my broken tooth hurt?
If the break hasn't reached the nerve (pulp), you may feel no pain initially. The tooth can still be at risk—exposed dentin allows bacteria in, and the nerve can die without warning. Always get broken teeth assessed, even painless ones.
How long does broken tooth repair take?
Bonding is completed in one appointment (30-60 minutes). Crowns traditionally require two visits, though same-day CEREC crowns are sometimes possible. Root canals may need 1-2 appointments before the final crown.
Will the repair look natural?
Absolutely. Modern composite resins and ceramics are matched precisely to your natural tooth colour. Our dentists are trained in aesthetic techniques—repairs should be virtually undetectable.
