Dental Erosion: Protect What Remains
Acid erosion dissolves your enamel—permanently. Once lost, it cannot regenerate. But we can stop the damage, strengthen what remains, and rebuild what's been lost with modern restorative techniques.

Understanding Dental Erosion: The Silent Destroyer
Dental erosion is the gradual loss of tooth enamel caused by acid attack. Unlike decay, which is caused by bacteria, erosion is a chemical process—acids from food, drinks, or stomach contents dissolve the mineral structure of your teeth. It's often painless until significant damage has occurred.
Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, yet it has no living cells and cannot repair itself. Once dissolved by acid, it's gone forever. This makes prevention and early intervention critical. At our South Kensington practice, we see dental erosion increasingly among health-conscious patients—often caused by the very habits they believe are good for them, like frequent lemon water or apple cider vinegar.
The good news is that we can halt progression, protect vulnerable areas, and restore teeth that have already suffered erosion. With the right approach, we can give you back a smile that's both beautiful and resilient.
What Causes Dental Erosion?
Erosion occurs when your teeth are exposed to acids. These can come from external sources (what you eat and drink) or internal sources (stomach acid):
Dietary Acids (Extrinsic Erosion)
Acidic Drinks
The most common culprits. Frequency of consumption matters more than quantity—sipping throughout the day is worse than drinking quickly.
- • Fizzy drinks (including diet/sugar-free)
- • Fruit juices (especially citrus)
- • Sports and energy drinks
- • Wine (especially white)
- • Kombucha and other fermented drinks
Acidic Foods
While generally less damaging than drinks (because we swallow food more quickly), frequent consumption adds up.
- • Citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, grapefruits)
- • Vinegar and pickled foods
- • Tomatoes and tomato-based sauces
- • Sour sweets
- • Berries
"Health" Habits
Ironically, some wellness trends are terrible for teeth:
- • Lemon water (especially warm)
- • Apple cider vinegar shots
- • Fruit smoothies
- • Detox drinks
- • Frequent vitamin C tablets
Environmental Factors
Certain environments and activities increase acid exposure:
- • Swimming in chlorinated pools
- • Wine tasters and sommeliers
- • Professional chefs (frequent tasting)
- • Battery factory workers
Stomach Acid (Intrinsic Erosion)
Stomach acid is far more corrosive than dietary acids. When it reaches the mouth repeatedly, erosion can be severe:
Medical Conditions
- • GORD/Acid reflux – Stomach acid flows back up
- • Bulimia nervosa – Frequent vomiting
- • Rumination syndrome – Regurgitating food
- • Hiatal hernia – Increases reflux risk
Situational Causes
- • Morning sickness during pregnancy
- • Alcohol-induced vomiting
- • Chronic nausea from medications
- • Chemotherapy side effects
Important: If we identify a pattern of erosion consistent with stomach acid, we'll recommend you see your GP. Treating the underlying cause is essential—no amount of dental restoration will last if acid reflux continues unchecked.
Signs and Symptoms of Dental Erosion
Erosion often progresses silently. By the time symptoms become obvious, significant enamel has already been lost:
Sensitivity
As enamel thins, the sensitive dentin layer beneath becomes exposed. You may notice sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods—often the first warning sign.
Discolouration
Teeth appear more yellow as white enamel wears away to reveal the darker dentin beneath. The edges of front teeth may become translucent or even transparent.
Rounded Teeth
Teeth lose their sharp edges and natural contours. The biting edges of front teeth may become thin, uneven, or develop small chips.
Cupping
Small dents or "cups" appear on the chewing surfaces of back teeth where acid has pooled and dissolved enamel. These can trap food and accelerate decay.
Fillings Standing Proud
Your fillings may start to look raised—this is because the surrounding enamel has worn away while the filling material remains unchanged.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the extent of erosion. Our approach is always two-fold: stop further damage and restore what's been lost.
1. Preventive Care & Monitoring (Early Erosion)
If erosion is caught early, we may be able to halt progression without restorative treatment:
- Identify and modify acidic dietary habits
- Prescribe high-fluoride toothpaste to strengthen remaining enamel
- Apply professional fluoride varnish treatments
- Regular monitoring to catch any progression early
- Recommend saliva-stimulating products if dry mouth is a factor
2. Composite Bonding (From £295 per tooth)
Composite bonding is ideal for moderate erosion, particularly on front teeth where edges have worn thin or become translucent:
- Tooth-coloured resin applied directly to worn areas
- Rebuilds lost tooth structure and protects exposed dentin
- Usually completed in one appointment
- Minimally invasive—no drilling in most cases
- Can be repaired or modified if needed
Ideal For:
Rebuilding worn incisal edges, covering exposed dentin, restoring tooth shape on front teeth, protecting sensitive areas. Best for localised erosion when underlying tooth structure is still sound.
3. Porcelain Veneers (From £950 per tooth)
For more extensive erosion, porcelain veneers provide comprehensive protection and a complete aesthetic transformation:
- Custom-made porcelain shells cover the entire front surface
- Highly stain-resistant and durable (10-15+ years)
- Restores natural tooth proportions and colour
- Protects remaining enamel from further acid attack
- Ideal when multiple front teeth are affected
4. Dental Crowns (From £750)
When erosion is severe and has compromised significant tooth structure, a dental crown may be needed to fully protect and restore the tooth:
- Full coverage protection for severely eroded teeth
- Restores proper bite function
- Essential for back teeth with significant cupping or wear
- Porcelain or zirconia options for natural appearance
5. Full Mouth Rehabilitation
In cases of generalised severe erosion—often seen with long-term acid reflux or eating disorders—a comprehensive rehabilitation may be needed. This might involve crowns, veneers, and onlays across multiple teeth to rebuild the bite and restore function.
Our Restorative Team
Treating dental erosion requires both diagnostic skill and artistic precision. Our team combines expertise in preventive care with advanced restorative techniques.
"Years of drinking lemon water had worn my front teeth down badly—they were translucent and chipping. Dr. Shirazi rebuilt them with composite bonding and they look completely natural. He also helped me understand how to protect them going forward. Wish I'd known sooner!"— Patient Review (Dental Erosion Treatment)
Preventing Further Erosion
Treatment only works if we address the underlying cause. Here's how to protect your teeth from acid damage:
Reduce Acid Exposure
Limit acidic drinks and foods. If you do consume them, do so at mealtimes rather than throughout the day. Use a straw for acidic drinks to bypass teeth. Avoid swishing drinks around your mouth.
Wait Before Brushing
After consuming acidic food or drink, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing. Acid softens enamel temporarily—brushing immediately can cause additional wear. Rinse with plain water instead.
Use Fluoride Products
Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps resist acid attack. We may prescribe high-fluoride toothpaste (2,800-5,000 ppm) or recommend regular fluoride treatments.
Neutralise Acids
After acidic exposure, neutralise with water, milk, or cheese. Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva, which naturally neutralises acids and aids remineralisation.
Address Medical Causes
If acid reflux, GORD, or an eating disorder is contributing, treating the underlying condition is essential. We can work with your GP or specialist to coordinate care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can eroded enamel be restored?
Lost enamel cannot regenerate naturally—it's gone permanently. However, we can rebuild the tooth's structure and appearance with bonding, veneers, or crowns. Early-stage erosion can be stabilised with fluoride treatments to prevent further loss.
Is dental erosion the same as tooth decay?
No. Decay is caused by bacteria producing acid that attacks specific spots. Erosion is chemical dissolution from dietary or stomach acids, typically affecting broad surfaces. You can have erosion without any decay, and vice versa. Both can occur together.
Why are my teeth sensitive if I have erosion?
Enamel is insulating—it protects the sensitive dentin layer beneath. As enamel wears away, dentin becomes exposed. Dentin contains microscopic tubes connecting to the nerve, which is why temperature, pressure, and sweet/acidic foods trigger sensitivity.
I drink diet fizzy drinks—are they safe for my teeth?
Unfortunately, no. While diet drinks don't contain sugar (so don't feed decay-causing bacteria), they're still highly acidic. The acid causes erosion regardless of sugar content. Sparkling water is also acidic, though less so than cola or lemonade.
How long do bonding repairs last on eroded teeth?
With good care and addressing the underlying acid source, composite bonding typically lasts 5-10 years. It can be repaired or replaced when needed. If erosion is ongoing, however, the bonding will fail faster—which is why stopping the acid attack is essential.
