Understanding Crowded Teeth
Dental crowding—or malocclusion—occurs when there is insufficient space in the jaw to accommodate all teeth in their correct positions. Teeth may overlap, rotate, twist, or push forward or backward, creating an irregular appearance and compromising both aesthetics and function.
Crowding is among the most common orthodontic concerns we address at our South Kensington practice. It affects patients of all ages, from teenagers whose adult teeth have erupted into limited space, to adults whose teeth have gradually shifted over time. The degree can range from mild (slight overlapping of one or two teeth) to severe (significant misalignment affecting multiple teeth).
Beyond the cosmetic impact, crowded teeth present genuine health concerns. Overlapping surfaces are difficult to clean effectively, creating harbours for plaque and bacteria that lead to decay and gum disease. An uneven bite can cause jaw strain, headaches, and accelerated wear on certain teeth. Fortunately, modern dentistry offers multiple elegant solutions.
What Causes Crowded Teeth?
Genetics
The most common cause. You may inherit a small jaw from one parent and larger teeth from another, creating a mismatch between available space and tooth size. Family history of crowding often predicts similar issues.
Early Loss of Baby Teeth
Baby teeth act as space maintainers for permanent teeth. Losing them prematurely (through decay or trauma) allows adjacent teeth to drift into the space, blocking the path for the adult tooth waiting to erupt.
Late Loss of Baby Teeth
Conversely, baby teeth that don't fall out on schedule can force adult teeth to erupt in incorrect positions, leading to crowding and misalignment.
Wisdom Teeth
Emerging wisdom teeth can exert pressure on existing teeth, particularly in the lower arch, potentially causing or worsening crowding. However, the relationship is more complex than once believed.
Childhood Habits
Prolonged thumb sucking, dummy use, or tongue thrusting during development can affect jaw growth and tooth positioning, contributing to crowding and other alignment issues.
Age-Related Shift
Teeth naturally drift forward throughout life—a phenomenon called mesial drift. Combined with wear and gum recession, this can cause crowding to develop or worsen in adulthood, even in people who had straight teeth in their youth.
The Health Impact of Crowded Teeth
While many patients seek treatment for aesthetic reasons, the health implications of untreated crowding are significant:
Increased Decay Risk
Overlapping teeth create hard-to-reach crevices where plaque accumulates. Even diligent brushers struggle to clean these areas effectively, leading to cavities between teeth.
Gum Disease
The same cleaning difficulties promote gum disease. Crowded teeth often show signs of gingivitis—inflammation, bleeding, and recession—at higher rates than well-aligned teeth.
Bad Breath
Trapped food particles and bacterial buildup in crowded areas contribute to persistent halitosis that doesn't respond to regular oral hygiene.
Uneven Wear
Misaligned teeth don't meet correctly when biting. This causes some teeth to bear more force than others, leading to premature wear, chipping, and even cracking.
TMJ Problems
An unbalanced bite strains the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), potentially causing jaw pain, clicking, headaches, and difficulty opening the mouth fully.
Speech Difficulties
Severe crowding can affect the tongue's ability to contact teeth correctly during speech, causing lisps or unclear pronunciation of certain sounds.
Treatment Options
At Cosmetic Dentistry Clinic, we offer multiple approaches to correcting crowded teeth. The ideal solution depends on the severity of crowding, your timeline, and your aesthetic goals.
1. ProAligners™ - Invisible Braces (From £2,000 | Members from £1,000)
Our signature ProAligners™ invisible braces use a series of custom-made, medical-grade clear aligners to gradually move teeth into optimal positions. Each set is worn for approximately two weeks before progressing to the next in the series. Unlike DIY mail-order aligners, ProAligners™ are doctor-led and include digital X-rays, IPR (interproximal reduction), and attachments for complex movements.
Ideal for: Mild to moderate crowding in adults who want a discreet, effective solution
- Virtually invisible when worn
- Removable for eating, drinking, and special occasions
- No dietary restrictions
- Easier to maintain oral hygiene than fixed braces
- Predictable results with 3D treatment planning
- Treatment typically 4-18 months depending on complexity
ProAligners™ Pricing Tiers
- Easy Align (Mild): Members £1,000 | Standard £2,000
- Smart Align (Moderate): Members £2,000 | Standard £4,000
- Ultimate Align (Complex): Members £2,990 | Standard £5,980
Membership: £20/month. Learn more about ProAligners™ →
2. Porcelain Veneers (From £995 per tooth)
For patients who want immediate results, porcelain veneers can create the appearance of perfectly aligned teeth without orthodontic treatment. Ultra-thin shells of handcrafted porcelain are bonded to the front surfaces, masking the underlying crowding.
Ideal for: Mild crowding with patients who also want to improve tooth colour, shape, or size
- Results in just 2-3 appointments
- Simultaneously addresses colour, shape, and alignment
- Highly durable (15-20+ years with care)
- Stain-resistant porcelain maintains brightness
- Natural, light-reflecting aesthetics
3. Composite Bonding (From £295 per tooth)
For very mild crowding, composite bonding can reshape teeth to create the illusion of better alignment. Tooth-coloured resin is sculpted directly onto teeth to close gaps, round sharp edges, or create more uniform proportions.
Ideal for: Minor irregularities, single-visit improvement
- Completed in a single appointment
- No tooth reduction required
- Completely reversible
- Most affordable cosmetic option
- Can be combined with other treatments
4. Smile Makeover (Custom pricing)
For comprehensive transformation, a smile makeover combines multiple treatments—potentially including alignment, whitening, veneers, and gum contouring—to achieve your ideal smile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Am I too old for teeth straightening?
Absolutely not. There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, alignment can be improved at any age. In fact, a growing proportion of our aligner patients are adults in their 40s, 50s, and beyond.
How long does treatment take?
Treatment duration depends on severity and method. Invisible aligners typically require 6-18 months for crowding cases. Veneers can be completed in 2-3 weeks. Composite bonding offers same-day results. During your consultation, we'll provide a personalised timeline.
Will straightening teeth hurt?
With clear aligners, you may experience mild pressure or tenderness for a day or two when switching to a new tray—this is the teeth moving. It's generally described as discomfort rather than pain and is easily managed with over-the-counter painkillers if needed.
Do I need to extract teeth to fix crowding?
Not necessarily. Modern techniques often create space through interproximal reduction (IPR)—gentle polishing between teeth to create fractions of a millimetre of space—or by expanding the arch. Extractions are typically reserved for severe crowding and are discussed thoroughly before proceeding.
Will my teeth stay straight after treatment?
With proper retention, yes. After any orthodontic treatment, we provide retainers (usually a thin wire bonded behind the teeth or clear retainer trays) to maintain results. Worn as directed, these ensure your investment in straight teeth lasts a lifetime.
