Whitening is regulated as a prescription dental procedure in the UK and is provided here only by GDC-registered dentists in our CQC-regulated clinic.

Why Whitening Is a Single-Tier Fee
Unlike extractions or implants, professional take-home whitening does not vary substantially in complexity from one healthy adult to another. The work involved — digital scan, custom tray fabrication, gel course, fitting appointment, and clinical supervision — is largely the same for each patient. We therefore offer a clear single fee for the package, rather than an open-ended estimate.
If you have specific issues that may affect outcome — such as tetracycline staining, fluorosis, dark internal discolouration of a non-vital tooth, or restorations on visible teeth — your dentist will discuss expectations honestly during your assessment. Composite bonding, veneers, and crowns do not whiten, so any front-tooth restorations may need to be replaced after whitening to match the new shade. Those treatments are quoted separately.
What Whitening Will — and Will Not — Do
Setting realistic expectations is a core part of valid informed consent. Tooth whitening can be highly effective for the right patient, but it is not a universal solution. After clinical assessment, your dentist will explain how whitening is likely to perform for you specifically. In general:
- It works well for: Generalised age-related yellowing, staining from coffee, tea, red wine, and dietary pigments on natural enamel.
- It works more variably for: Tetracycline staining, fluorosis, and grey discolouration — results may be limited and a longer course may be needed.
- It does not change the colour of: Composite bonding, veneers, crowns, or other restorations. A single dark non-vital tooth often needs different treatment (e.g. internal bleaching, considered separately).
- It cannot: Whiten teeth beyond their natural enamel limit. There is a biological maximum brightness that varies by individual.
We do not make absolute promises about specific shade outcomes. We do provide a clear, written treatment plan and discuss what is realistic for your case.
How You'll Receive Your Quote
Suitability Assessment
Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums, review your medical history, and confirm there are no contraindications to whitening (such as open cavities, untreated gum disease, or current pregnancy).
Shade Baseline and Expectations
We record your current shade, photograph it where helpful, and discuss what is realistically achievable for your specific enamel and staining type.
Written Treatment Plan and Estimate
You receive a written plan setting out the agreed fee, what is included, and any pre-treatment work that may be needed (e.g. hygiene appointment). No surprises, no add-ons later.
Informed Consent and Booking
Treatment proceeds only after you have given written informed consent, having had the benefits, risks (including sensitivity), and alternatives explained.
Ways to Pay
Pay on the Day
Card and contactless payments are accepted at reception. Typically the package is split across two appointments (scan + fitting).

Finance disclosure: Finance is provided by an FCA-authorised third-party lender and is subject to status. Cosmetic Dentistry Clinic is a credit broker, not a lender. Professional Whitening vs Over-the-Counter Products
It is worth understanding why professional whitening is priced differently from products sold in shops or online. This is both a clinical and a regulatory point:
- UK regulation: Under EU Council Directive 2011/84/EU (retained in UK law), only dentists may legally provide whitening gels with more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. Stronger, dentist-prescribed gels deliver more reliable results.
- Custom trays: Our trays are laboratory-fabricated from a digital scan of your teeth, ensuring a precise seal that keeps gel on the enamel and off the gums.
- Clinical oversight: A GDC-registered dentist supervises suitability, dose, duration, and aftercare — including managing any sensitivity that arises.
- Stronger evidence base: Professional take-home whitening with custom trays has strong long-term evidence; many over-the-counter strips and pens have limited active ingredient and patchy results.
A note on social-media whitening: Whitening offered by non-dentists — including in beauty salons or unregulated mobile services — is illegal in the UK and unsafe. The General Dental Council prosecutes those practising dentistry without registration. If in doubt, ask whether your provider is GDC-registered.
Risks We Discuss During Consent
Whitening is safe and well tolerated when supervised by a dentist, but, as with any treatment, there are recognised side effects we will discuss honestly before you proceed:
- Tooth sensitivity: The most common side effect. Usually mild and short-lived; managed by adjusting wear time, using desensitising agents, or pausing for a day or two.
- Gum irritation: Rare when trays are well-fitted; managed by trimming the tray, using less gel, or briefly pausing treatment.
- Uneven initial result: Teeth do not all lighten at the same rate; this typically evens out by the end of the course.
- Existing restorations: Will not whiten and may need to be replaced afterwards to match your new shade (quoted separately).
- Variable response: Tetracycline staining, fluorosis, or grey discolouration may respond less predictably.
- Not suitable during: Pregnancy and breastfeeding; for individuals under 18; or where there are untreated cavities, exposed root surfaces, or active gum disease.

Meet our clinical teamFrequently Asked Questions About Cost
How much is professional teeth whitening in London?
At Cosmetic Dentistry Clinic, the take-home whitening package costs £399 as standard, £199 for Privilege Members, and is also available at the introductory rate of £199 for qualifying new patients. The fee is single-tier and inclusive of digital scan, custom trays, gel course, and fitting.
Is the consultation fee separate?
For new patients booking whitening directly, a clinical assessment is included in the package — provided no separate dental issues are identified that need their own consultation. A standalone new-patient exam (£95) may be recommended in some cases to assess overall oral health.
What is the introductory rate, and who qualifies?
The £199 introductory rate is offered to qualifying new patients, subject to availability and clinical suitability after assessment. It is not combinable with other offers, and final eligibility is confirmed in writing. Full terms are provided at consultation.
How much can I save with Privilege Membership?
Members pay £199, a £200 saving versus the standard fee. See our Membership page for full eligibility, monthly cost, and other included savings.
Will I need to pay for additional gel later?
The package includes a full course of gel sufficient for most patients to reach their realistic shade. If you would like top-up syringes for occasional maintenance later, these can be supplied at additional cost — quoted at the time, with no obligation to buy.
Why is professional whitening more expensive than over-the-counter products?
In the UK, whitening gels above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide may legally be supplied only by GDC-registered dentists. Professional whitening also includes a clinical assessment, custom laboratory-made trays, dentist supervision, and aftercare. Over-the-counter products are not legally allowed to contain the active ingredient strength needed for predictable results.
Do you offer 0% finance for teeth whitening?
Finance is generally suited to higher-value treatment plans. Where finance is available it is provided by an FCA-authorised third-party lender, subject to status; Cosmetic Dentistry Clinic is a credit broker, not a lender. Please ask at consultation whether your plan qualifies.
If I have veneers, crowns, or bonding, is whitening still worth it?
Whitening only affects natural enamel — it does not change the colour of restorations. Your dentist will discuss the trade-offs honestly: in some cases whitening followed by replacing the visible restorations to match is a better long-term plan, and that is quoted separately.
Are there situations where you would not recommend whitening?
Yes. We do not provide whitening during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for people under 18, or where there is untreated decay, exposed root surfaces, or active gum disease. In those cases we will explain why and what (if anything) can be done first.
Is the introductory rate a "lead-in" price that increases later?
No. The £199 introductory fee is the full, single fee for the take-home whitening package for qualifying patients. There is no second instalment, hidden activation fee, or compulsory upsell. Any optional extras (such as future top-up gel) are entirely your choice.
